Often, the caregivers (usually family members or close friends) lose contact with their loved ones due to limited function. Music Therapy can be an effective way of helping the family and friends of a resident express personal feelings, fears and needs related to the changing role of a caregiver.

The group provides an environment for safely sharing and dealing with common concerns and issues, due to personal life changes. The music therapist, who is also skilled in psychotherapeutic practices, uses music to facilitate self-expression, both musically and verbally.

How it works:

  • Caregiver and patient re-establish connections through expressive music making.
  • Issues related to caregiving are processed musically and verbally.
  • Music can be adapted to the specific needs of the caregiver.

What happens during a session:

  • Music making in a group or individual environment.
  • Based on discussion with the therapist, music making experiences are developed to promote greater understanding.

Outcomes:

  • A medium of communication is provided to the caregiver and resident that wouldn't otherwise be possibe (maintaining relationships on the deepest level)
  • Coping and survival skills are developed, and individuals gain more control over their own environment.
  • Stress reduction and relaxation techniques are learned so that they can be applied outside of the group setting.
