This is designed to meet the needs of the younger population of adults at Beth Abraham Family of Health Services. It addresses their emotional, physical, and spiritual needs, which are processed in improvised or composed music produced by the patients and the music therapist together. The sessions are taped, so that patients can listen and review the music during and after the sessions. The approach is music psychotherapeutic and the areas that are targeted are as follows:

  • coping skills in terms of dealing with physical illness
  • coping skills in relation to living in an institution
  • dealing with depression, isolation, hopelessness and loss of control
  • improvement of independence
  • intrapersonal and interpersonal communication skills
  • marshalling of spirituality and new resources
  • facilitation of creativity
  • improvement of life quality
  • socialization skills and relationships in the community
  • preparation for future discharge
  • conflict resolution skills
  • self relaxation and stress management skills

It is an open group in which any young person can participate no matter what their musical skills are.
