The Effects of a Music Therapy Intervention on the Levels of Depression, Anxiety/Agitation and Quality of Life Experience by Individuals Diagnosed with Early and Middle Stage Dementias

Research Question

While it is believed that music therapy is helpful for all types of dementia, this research deals with individuals who are in the early and middle stages of dementia as measured by the Mini-Mental Status Exam. The following question will be answered through this project. “Does the application of a music therapy intervention in a skilled nursing facility environment have an effect on the level of depression, anxiety, and quality of life of individual patients who are suffering from early and middle stage dementia?”

Objective

Objective 1: To show that the application of a music therapy intervention program will have an effect on the level of depression suffered by individuals in the early and middle stages of dementia. This will be true for individuals who are clinically depressed as well as those who have a depressed affect.

Objective 2: To show that the application of a music therapy intervention will have an effect on the level of anxiety and agitation suffered by individuals in the early and middle stages of dementia.

Objective 3: The application of a music therapy intervention will have an effect on the quality of life of individuals in the early and middle stages of dementia.
